A Gluten free/dairy free guide to Devon

At The Food Diary Co we know eating out in a new city is an exciting and terrifying prospect in equal measure. So we're getting our favourite gluten free, low FODMAP and Dairy free folks to tell you their secret favourite places to eat in their cities!

Today the fabulous Holly of @thegirlcantgluten is giving us her gluten free/dairy free guided tour of Devon...

I was diagnosed with IBS and interstitial cystitis when I was a teenager and went through every stage of grief (mainly denial!) because there didn’t seem to be a straightforward treatment for either. Fast forward through a few years of constant illness, lost friendships and generally feeling shite - in my twenties I finally decided to take low fodmap, the IC diet and my medication seriously as my health was declining to the point where it was putting a strain on everyone round me and I feared I’d have to give up the career I love. Nowadays with support from my fantastic gastroenterologist, family and close friends I’m starting to feel human again and I’m getting used to what I can eat.

I’m sure we’re all familiar with the fear that can develop when you’ve got to go out with friends, family or co-workers that don’t have special dietary requirements and I’m hoping this gluten and dairy free guide to Devon I’ve put together will alleviate some of those worries for people. Enjoy!

The Wild Fig Deli and Café, Totnes

Totnes is a historic market town at the head of the estuary of the River Dart and a brilliant place to visit with its stunning castle and weekly food market. The Wild Fig is a delicatessen café located in Totnes’ heart that specialises in gluten free and vegan food, it is situated perfectly to pop in for a quick coffee and slice of cake or you can take your time and enjoy a delicious brunch. My favourites are their coconut milk iced vanilla latte and a slice of their raw sugar free vegan salted caramel chocolate cake.

Cantina Kitchen and Bar, Paignton

This family run restaurant bar is a hidden gem located right on the front of the picturesque Goodrington beach and has a delightfully Spanish feel with its décor. They have a wide range of gluten free, dairy free and vegan options on their menu and the staff are exceptionally knowledgeable in what they can adapt to suit your dietary requirements. Their fresh fish is sourced locally and they have weekly live music events which are not to be missed, I highly recommend their buddha bowl salad or handmade GF pizzas.

The Rockfish, Plymouth

Rockfish have branches located in seaside towns and cities through Devon including Plymouth, Dartmouth and Brixham with each sourcing their fresh fish locally. Their entire menu is available gluten free and their GF batter is also free from dairy. For other intolerances they have a handy search engine on their online menu in which you can check which options would be suitable for you. The specials menu changes daily depending on what’s available and the staff are excellent in advising you on what to order. The chips are also unlimited…you heard me, unlimited!

Pie Street Café Bar & Restaurant, Totnes

This lighthearted Totnes restaurant is one of my favourite places in Devon and as a bonus you can also opt to take away throughout the day. Most of their menu can be adapted to be completely gluten and dairy free, and if you’ve got any other dietary concerns just call or email and the Pie Street staff will discuss what they can do for you. Make sure you ring to reserve your pies in advance as they are made fresh each day!

The Green Table Café, Dartington

The Green Table is directly opposite the stunning Dartington Hall with its vast gardens, shopping complex and cinema. There’s a wide selection of gluten free cakes, salads, sandwiches and hot options which can be enjoyed inside the relaxed canteen style café or outside looking out onto the bustling Dartington Estate. The menu is clearly marked with its allergens and staff are happy to recommend options.

Clive’s Pies, Buckfastleigh

Although Clive’s Pies aren’t an eatery in Devon I’ve decided to mention them because they’re readily available in many retailers around Devon and are produced locally to me in Buckfastleigh. They’re perfect to eat on the go and have a wide range of vegan and gluten free options to suit any taste. I recently had the opportunity to visit the bakery and meet the owner Sally, I was blown away by their dedication to avoiding cross contamination and producing a product of the highest quality.
